Today we’d like to introduce you to Houston Rasmussen.
Hi Houston, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
H&M Top-Notch Landscaping began out of a deeply personal need to heal. After serving on the front lines in the Army, infantry, I returned home carrying the heavy weight of combat—an environment defined by chaos, noise, and destruction. I knew that to find my own peace, I needed to transition away from that darkness and channel my energy into doing the exact opposite: creating life, building beauty, and healing the land.Working with the earth became my sanctuary. Where I once experienced destruction, I now found a profound purpose in nurturing growth. Landscaping wasn’t just a business; it was a mission to use my hands to add value to the world, restore neglected spaces, and bring order to chaos. When we brought this heart for service into Yamhill County, something incredible happened. We didn’t just mow lawns; we cared for people’s sanctuaries. Our clients quickly felt the genuine care, military-grade discipline, and absolute integrity behind our work. Because we poured our hearts into every property—treating each estate, winery, and family home as a mission of restoration—word spread fast. That deep trust is how we quickly grew into a local leader. We are immensely proud to protect our neighbors’ investments, restore local habitats, and leave this beautiful county more vibrant and peaceful than we found it. In two short years we have a major foothold on the locak market providing what is regarded to as the premium landscape managment , local sprinkler and pond authority, emergency restoration and repairs and i am more then suprised how well we eased into our competitive market.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Struggled along the way have included personal life balance with 4 kids myself and maggie my wife balance all the administrative, legal, and marketing /client relations between the two of us. I also am i operator on every single job i am present from estimates to end of project and follow ups. There has been scheduling bottlenecks and long hours as we are open 7 days a week from 730- 830 pm.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Together we bring over 15 years of experience to the table. Maggies customer service and receptionist property managment background is stellar. Clients often state that maggie needs to stay on the phones and makes a lasting inpact on the decision initially made to hire us . The knowledge and industry background i provide to the operation comes from 12 years working as branch manager of maintenance and irrigation for some of the regions large corporate landscape giants. Ive seen and learned from other leaders in the professional feild what works and what doesnt. What sets us apart is our special niches such as pond care and restoratiions, top notch contracts , sprinkler diagnostics and trouble shooting and our estate level landscape maintenance we apply to each and every property whether its a small residential home or a large winery estate. We also provide invasive brush clearing not just cutting, this involves knowledge of timing, soil make up, growth patterns and root level extraction of things like poison hemlock, poison oak. Blackberry and ivy. Our pond work focuses on science proven approaches solving the underlying issue rather then throwing bandaids on treating symptoms. We also bring to the table turf health and disease services , eco friendly weed eradication. Pollinator and native gardens , custom themed ornamental designs and much more to the table , standing out as not your average mow blow and go outfit.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I appreciate most about McMinnville is the community’s shared desire to care for and preserve the environment around us. As a local landscaper, I get to see firsthand how much pride people take in their properties and public spaces. There is a real collective effort here to treat the land with respect, heal the soil, and build sustainable, beautiful outdoor spaces that families can enjoy for generations. It’s a city where hard work directly translates into a healthier, greener community. I grew up and enjoyed my simple childhood in yamhill county. Life has somehow always brought me back to yamhill county and its where we chose to raise a family and plant the roots of our business in hopes one day one of our 4 children carry on our legacy.
