Hi Kim, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Back to Basics started in 2007 when Kim, our founder decided to take her knack for management, operations, corporate training, and bookkeeping skills and turn it into a bookkeeping firm…“making perfect cents”.
With over 20+ years of experience, she’s built a reputation for keeping books squeaky clean while keeping clients feeling supported and understood.
In 2020, right as the world was turning upside down, Iryna joined the team. It didn’t take long to realize we are a powerhouse duo, Kim’s big-picture leadership paired with Iryna’s love for systems, clean-up projects, and all things QuickBooks. Some of the common things we share include our double major degrees, husbands, kids, kitties and OCD tendencies.
By 2023, it was official: we became partners, combining our strengths into something even better.
Today, B2B is more than just the two of us. We’ve grown into a remote team of talented contractors spread across the U.S., who share our values which are clear communication, meticulous work, and genuine care for our clients.
We’re real people who love what we do. We balance each other’s strengths, we balance the books, and most importantly – we help our clients find balance in their business.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Heck no!
I would say the struggles were finding support from others in my same industry, finding good partnerships with others, and finding a good team.
I created a non-profit called All Star Accounting Professionals Inc. back in 2012, which is now my ongoing support community in the accounting industry.

It was also a learning curve to figure out which clients were right fit for B2B. We may have been good at doing a specific industries books, but that didn’t always mean we enjoyed doing those type of books. Saying “no” to particular clients & referring them to others as well as setting boundaries to maintain a balance between work and personal life was a MUST.
Last, figuring out the sweet spot on pricing and what type of clients we attract in that price point took a bit. Once I had gotten this dialed in, it was a breath of fresh air & now we have a waiting list of potential clients.

I would say what sets us apart from others is the LOVE we put into what we do.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
My career counselors all told me to go into Event Management of some sort. Instead, I have thrown some amazing themed parties for my boys and friends including my own birthday parties that I plan annually.
I started my degree in accounting and changed my major half way through my studies to a double major in Management & Marketing. I do not have an accounting degree.
My passion just out of college was to be a Wedding Planner. I sold wedding gowns in college as one of my 3 jobs and it was my most favorite job ever. I landed a job managing a tuxedo shop when I first moved to Portland, OR. And, I went back to school to take flower arranging and photography classes to be well rounded in the wedding industry. I never became a Wedding Planner as I quickly discovered I would have to work nights & weekends and income was not steady for my single life.
Just before I fell into the bookkeeping world, I was a Software Trainer and was on the road 4 out of the 5 days a week between California, Oregon, Washington, and parts of Colorado.
