Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Stein.
Hi Melanie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My path into medicine became personal while I was still in naturopathic medical school. One morning, I woke up completely paralyzed. Instead of receiving clear answers, I was dismissed by physicians and given a diagnosis of conversion disorder.
But I knew something deeper was happening.
That moment changed the direction of my life and career. I began researching my own case, pursuing more specialized testing, and looking for patterns that were being missed. Eventually, I uncovered the true underlying picture: chronic Lyme disease with multiple co-infections.
That experience shaped the way I practice today. I understand what it feels like to be sick, scared, and dismissed. I also know how life-changing it can be when someone finally takes the full story seriously.
Today, I specialize in complex chronic illness, including Lyme disease, mold illness, MCAS, POTS, Long COVID, autoimmune disease, and environmental illness. My work focuses on cellular health, Cell Membrane Therapy, immune regulation, mitochondrial support, and helping the body return to a state where healing can occur.
I’m a licensed Naturopathic Physician and the Medical Director of Restorative Health Clinic in Portland, Oregon. I earned my Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine and Master’s in Acupuncture from the National University of Natural Medicine.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. One of the hardest parts was not just becoming ill, but being dismissed while trying to find answers.
During medical school, I was navigating severe neurological symptoms while also trying to continue my training. The diagnosis I was given did not match what I knew was happening in my body. That created a difficult but defining season of uncertainty, persistence, and self-advocacy.
It also gave me a deep respect for patients who arrive with complicated histories and no clear explanation. Many have spent years being told their labs are normal, their symptoms are unrelated, or their condition is too complicated to understand. My own experience taught me that complexity is not a reason to stop investigating. It is a reason to look deeper.
Building a clinic around this type of medicine has also required resilience. Complex chronic illness care is not simple or linear. These patients often need a careful, layered approach that considers infection, immune function, inflammation, the nervous system, mitochondrial health, environmental exposures, and cellular repair. Just as importantly, they need a physician who will walk beside them through the process, offer encouragement during the difficult periods, and help them continue moving forward when progress feels slow.
Those challenges became part of my mission. They shaped me into a physician who listens carefully, thinks systematically, and remains committed to identifying the underlying drivers of illness.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Restorative Health Clinic of Portland?
Restorative Health Clinic of Portland specializes in integrative care for complex chronic illness. We work with patients who often have layered conditions such as Lyme disease and co-infections, mold illness, MCAS, POTS, Long COVID, chronic fatigue, GI symptoms, autoimmune disease, dysautonomia, environmental illness, and inflammatory conditions.
Our clinic is designed for patients who need more than a standard workup or a one-size-fits-all protocol. Many come to us after years of symptoms, multiple providers, and incomplete answers. They are looking for a team that can step back, connect the pieces, and create a plan that reflects the full complexity of their case.
What sets Restorative Health Clinic apart is our focus on cellular health. We evaluate how the body produces energy, regulates inflammation and immune function, communicates between cells, responds to stress, and carries out repair. A central part of our approach is Cell Membrane Therapy, which supports the structure and function of the cell membrane and helps create the foundation for the body to rebuild from within.
Our care may include advanced testing, IV therapy, immune support, mitochondrial support, neural therapy, ozone therapy, red light therapy, peptide therapies, and targeted protocols for chronic infection, mold illness, MCAS, dysautonomia, and inflammatory disease.
I also lecture across the country, advocating for patients with complex chronic illness and teaching other physicians how to better recognize and treat conditions that are often missed or misunderstood.
What sets us apart is our combination of lived experience, clinical depth, and continued education. Our team studies with leaders in chronic disease, environmental medicine, Lyme disease, mold illness, immune dysfunction, and cellular health to keep improving the care we provide.
Brand-wise, we are most proud of creating a place where patients feel seen and taken seriously. Our goal is to offer hope without oversimplifying the process. Complex illness requires patience, strategy, and a willingness to understand the whole person.
Our mission is to help patients move beyond survival and into true restoration.
