Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Gregg.
Hi Sean, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story actually started in high school. I read a book about chiropractic for a class report and something just clicked. At the time my career choices were marine biologist, because what millennial did not want to be a marine biologist, or history teacher. Chiropractic ended up being the path that felt right.
I went to Southern Oregon University, earned my bachelor’s degree in Human Biology, and then completed my Doctor of Chiropractic from Western States University. The whole journey took eight years, which is a lot more schooling than most people realize. Even while I was in school, I always looked for extra training and continuing education because I wanted to be the best clinician I could be. Sixteen years later, that mindset has never changed.
Right as I graduated, life threw me a curveball. I was diagnosed with cancer, which forced me to put everything on hold. Looking back, there was a silver lining because that chapter led me to meeting my future wife.
After I recovered, we moved to San Diego because I had never lived outside of Oregon and wanted to experience somewhere new. The job I took was not what I had hoped for. I was underpaid, overworked, and constantly promised that things would get better. They never really did, so we moved back to Oregon where I started my own practice.
Things were going well until we found out we were expecting our first child. I needed more financial stability, so I joined a very busy clinic. It was successful on paper, but it was not how I wanted to practice. Everything revolved around volume and how many patients could be seen in a day. I did not have the time to build relationships or provide the kind of care I believed people deserved. It also meant long hours and a long commute, which took valuable time away from my wife and kids.
In 2018, we decided to make a big change. We sold our house, packed everything up, and moved to Bend. We bought an existing practice, and if I am being honest, I probably would not make that same decision again knowing what I know now. But we worked hard, built a strong patient base, and then COVID hit. Almost overnight we lost around 70 percent of our patients.
Like a lot of small businesses, we had to adapt. We kept moving forward, adjusted how we practiced, and slowly rebuilt. Today our practice is stronger than it has ever been. Through every challenge, my goal has stayed the same. I want people to feel welcomed, heard, and cared for from the moment they walk through our doors.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would definitely not call it a smooth road. It has been full of bumps and potholes.
There have been challenges we could never have planned for, including my cancer diagnosis, navigating COVID as a small business owner, the constant battle with insurance companies, and more recently, our son being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
Those are the kinds of things you cannot control, but they still affect every part of your life. Running a practice while dealing with insurance can be frustrating because you often have to fight to be paid for the care you have already provided. Then there are the personal challenges.
Our son’s Type 1 diabetes has probably been the biggest adjustment our family has ever faced. It is an invisible disease that never takes a day off. There are no weekends, no vacations, and no breaks from managing it. It has brought stress and worry that naturally spills over into every part of life, including work.
If you know someone living with Type 1 diabetes, give them a hug and tell them you are proud of them. Most people never see how much work happens behind the scenes every single day.
So yes, there have definitely been some bumps along the way. But every challenge has reinforced why family comes first and why creating a practice built around people instead of numbers matters so much to me.
As you know, we’re big fans of Bend Chiropractic and Wellness. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Our mission at Bend Chiropractic and Wellness is to help people move better, feel better, and enjoy life without pain getting in the way. We care for everyone from athletes and weekend warriors to parents, retirees, and people who simply want to get through their day more comfortably.
I would describe myself as a movement- and rehabilitation-based chiropractor. While chiropractic adjustments are an important part of what I do, I also spend a lot of time teaching patients how to move better and giving them the tools and exercises they need to stay healthy long after they leave the office. My goal is to help people become less dependent on treatment, not more.
I have a particular interest in treating low back pain because it’s one of the most common problems I see, but I enjoy treating all areas of the body. Every patient is different, and I like the challenge of figuring out what’s really driving someone’s pain and creating a plan that’s specific to them.
What probably sets me apart most is the amount of time I spend with my patients. I don’t believe in rushing people through an appointment. Taking the time to listen, perform a thorough evaluation, explain what’s going on, and answer questions helps patients feel confident in their care and leads to better outcomes.
What I’m most proud of is the practice my wife and I have built together. We wanted Bend Chiropractic and Wellness to be a place where people feel genuinely welcomed from the moment they walk through the door. Creating a friendly, supportive environment while providing high-quality, evidence-based care has always been our priority, and we’re grateful for the trust our patients place in us every day.
How do you think about luck?
Who does not appreciate a little luck? My dad always used to say, “I would rather be lucky than good.”
I honestly wish I had a little more of it sometimes. That said, I feel incredibly lucky where it really matters. I have an amazing wife, great kids, and a family that has supported me through every challenge.
My wife and I joke that we have what we call “baby luck.” It is those strange moments where you are wondering how you are going to pay a bill and an insurance check shows up the day before it is due, or you think a concert is sold out but decide to check one more time and somehow there are tickets available.
So yes, I think luck plays a role. But I also believe success comes from showing up every day, putting in the work, and continuing to move forward even when life throws obstacles in your path. Luck might open a door once in a while, but hard work is what gets you through it.
