Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Giles.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started Girl.Copy back in 2015. I had just had my first surprise baby and was bored with motherhood, so I decided to start a business! I had been working as a recruiter for a third-party executive search firm and kept getting feedback that I was great at writing in general and also at writing resumes (specifically). I’ve been a writer my whole life — ever since I won a writing contest through my local library when I was in third grade. At that point, I had also been a professional actor for about four years. I knew how to read people pretty well, so combining all of those skills into helping people find jobs seemed like a natural fit. It’s been 10 years, and Girl.Copy is still going strong, despite AI-generated content flooding the internet!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at ALL. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from Georgia Southern University into one of the worst recessions this country has ever seen. While I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit, I had no formal education in running a business. And, like I said, AI has taken over everything, including resume-writing and related services. COVID also played a major factor; everyone was out of work, but subsequently, no one had money to hire a resume writer, which is essentially a luxury service, especially now. I’m lucky that I have amazing repeat clients! Almost all of my marketing has been done through word-of-mouth, so that’s been nice, too. I have 5-star reviews across all social platforms — but that still doesn’t bring in the big bucks like it used to (kidding. My bucks were never that big!).
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in marketing copy — so things like Instagram captions, blogs, advertising copy, you name it — and resumes. I suppose I’m most proud of the work I did when I worked for Bravo (yes, THAT Bravo, of Real Housewives acclaim!). That was my dream marketing job. I’m also incredibly proud of the work I get to do with my resume clients. I love hearing about them getting their dream jobs! Getting an email from a former resume client really makes my day.
I think the thing that sets me apart from others is that I never try to sell anyone on my services. I honestly hate selling. If they want to hire me, they’ll hire me; I don’t want to convince anyone that I’m good. I know I’m good. I’m also pretty transparent about the job market and try to go above and beyond for my clients, offering free career advice any chance I can! Resumes get your foot in the door, but YOU’RE the one who gets YOU hired at the end of the day.
