Life & Work with Cat Dossett of Oregon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cat Dossett.

Hi Cat, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Alaska and was an artist from a young age. Once I got my first camera in middle school I really never stopped clicking. Working in the wedding industry for 15+ years gave me a lot of experience with the ins and outs of planning and details of the day, which has led me to where I am now working as a wedding designer along with my photography. I love building scenes, shaping mood, and creating images that are breathtaking as hell. Not “put a pillow here” styling, but real visual direction. I believe weddings should be incredible and intimate, a unique take for each couple and their guests to really create an experience that is special for all in attendance.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I started there was no online community, no friendly local photographer friends to help lead the way. And once I did move to the states where I finally found a larger industry and community, it took a long time for me to find my place within it, and that has continued to evolve over the years. Plus the regular struggles of running a business, when really you’re just an artist who wants to make cool stuff. I wish I was a billionaire so I could work for free and just bring a little joy to everyone’s day.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a creative stylist and photographer. I take your vague “we have a vibe” energy and turn it into a visual plan you can trust, then I photograph it with an editorial eye and a calm, steady presence. I’m for couples who want intimacy on purpose, design that feels like them (not a trend cycle), and photos that hit you in the chest when you look back at them. My style is funky, bold, and bright. For my creative shoots, I often craft a lot of the clothing or prop items myself, and these unique custom details make all the difference. I’m definitely not a minimalist, but I’m also big on details being intentional and meaningful to the moment. I’m not just there to capture the moment, I’m styling while designing the final images in my head which creates styling and photography that actually work together.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Do what you love and the rest will follow. My parents always told this to me and I was lucky they encouraged and supported me following my dreams at such a young age. It took me a long time to realize I didn’t have to follow the trends and could be bold in my own way, your people are out there looking and they will find you the more true to yourself you are!
