Hi DEF davyne & King Delane, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
King Delane: I’ve been making music my entire life. I’ve been through a lot in life and started using it as an outlet before I started pursuing it as a career. My journey has been a long road and I’ve been a survivor through it all. Coming from nothing will either make you or break you. I definitely feel it made me who I am today and you can see that reflection in my music.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
DEF davyne: Starting in the late 1990s and watching technology completely change the music industry has been my biggest obstacle. I found success selling physical CDs in the early 2000s, and then found success again selling MP3s online. Now that streaming is prominent, and content creation is key, the formula for seeing a return on investment continues to change often. Through it all, I face this challenge by always making the best possible music regardless of trends or fads.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
King Delane: With everyone wanting to be an artist now you have to stand out. I’ve seen trends come and go and I’ve always stayed true to myself. I’ve been know for my work ethic, my influence, and my presence. Times have changed but my drive hasn’t. That said, after all these years people still reach out for features and bookings. I’d have to say I’m proud of everything I’ve overcame and still kept going.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
DEF davyne: Most artists aren’t born rich, so being a musician will always be a financial risk in itself. But the kind of risk-taking that I’ve found to be most rewarding doesn’t involve money at all. As a writer I have discovered that my most vulnerable tracks usually resonate the most with a variety of fans new and old. Being transparent in a scripted world is the ultimate risk, but humans crave authenticity. So I have lost some fair-weather fans over the years, but gained even more loyal ones in the process by taking risks.
