Life & Work with Jason Lee of Oregon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Lee.

Hi Jason, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My passion for being in the garden and surrounded by flowers and plants began at a very young age and was encouraged by my grandparents large home garden and landscape.
I ended up perusing a degree in horticulture with an emphasis in garden design and spent the first few years out of school working in both the landscape design and installation realm. Ultimately landing a dream job working under a very talented and creative floral designer in my home town of Boise ID. From there I was inspired to create my first boutique style plant and floral shop called The Burrow.
After some life rearranging and a move to Corvallis OR I spent the next 5 years listening to my intuition and fully stepping into my truth as an artist who uses a wide range of florals, foliage, plants, gardens as my mediums. No matter what I am designing, that creative outlet and expression is my art that I then put back into the world for others to experience and hopefully enjoy.
Adonis Floral Design is the name given to the design studio brought to realty with the help and partnership with Britnee F. A friend and former coworker when we both had been working for a traditional local flower shop.
With Adonis Floral I see it as an umbrella which cover so many of our creative outlets and creations. We make arrangements and installations from graduations and corporate events to celebrations of life and wedding installations, daily delivery and in home floral and plant care.
I wanted this business to be my break away from the traditional flower shop modal and truly be a shop that people either vibe with or they don’t and the ones who get it, those are our people. The ones who want something unique and memorable. An experience.
We use only high quality floral for our arrangements and also have a seasonal option for exclusively local florals only arrangements.
Our goal is to educate and also show the community and those we come in contact with, that flowers aren’t just flowers and the power of a beautiful bouquet or a special outdoor space where a person can find a moment to take a deep breath and slow time and reconnect with the ephemeral magical world we sometimes forget to celebrate. We believe there is almost nothing more important and truly needed especially in the world today.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Honestly the biggest struggle for me is trying to educate people that buying cheap mass produced and shipped flowers from the grocery store for $25 is exactly the mentality that kills small business that are creating one of a kind works of floral art and that has become the expectation.
Instead pay a small business owner, designer to create something one of a kind for you and pay them for their creativity not for the convenience.
Flowers even mass produced, market flowers average $6-8 stem at wholesale so when a florist makes something exceptional it’s worth $100 +
That and trusting to follow my own creative voice without feeling guilty for choosing my own path vs staying on someone else’s.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am truly inspired by the natural cycles of the natural world and garden so my designs always incorporate fresh seasonal flowers with grasses and seed pods and branches and dried elements you find as if collecting you bouquet straight from an over abundant old world garden.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Definitely read books and watch videos or follow other people or artist that inspire you and remember that nothing in the natural world can be completely copied so allow yourself the freedom to see others work and create and inspire your own. Anything done with pure intention will be recognized as such. Stop living in a world of exclusivity and mine. Art is for everyone to enjoy.
