Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Middleton.
Hi Jessica, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
For most of my adult life, I’ve balanced multiple roles at once — wife, mom, full-time healthcare leader, and creative. Photography started as something deeply personal for me. I’ve always been drawn to storytelling, emotion, and preserving moments that feel real instead of overly posed or perfect.
Over time, what began as a creative outlet slowly grew into JM Photography and Rooted & Bloom. I built it little by little while working full time in healthcare leadership and raising my family. There were seasons where life felt overwhelming, and photography became one of the few places where I felt grounded and able to create beauty out of ordinary moments.
My style has evolved alongside me. In the beginning, I focused heavily on learning the technical side of photography, but over the years I realized the images people connect with most are the ones that feel authentic and emotional. I’m inspired by nature, storytelling, the Pacific Northwest, motherhood, and the imperfect but meaningful moments that make up real life.
Today, I specialize in outdoor portrait photography with a style that blends earthy tones, emotion, storytelling, and connection. I especially love creating sessions that feel intentional and unique to the people in front of my camera. Whether it’s families, seniors, maternity, or creative themed sessions, I want people to feel seen and comfortable rather than pressured to be perfect.
At the same time, I’m still growing and learning. I think one of the biggest things my journey has taught me is that you don’t have to have everything figured out before you start building something meaningful. Sometimes growth happens slowly, in small consistent steps, and that’s still growth.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been learning how to balance building a creative business while also working full time and raising a family. There have been many seasons where I felt stretched thin trying to give my best to everything at once.
I’ve also struggled with self-doubt and imposter syndrome, especially as someone who did not come from a traditional business or photography background. A lot of what I’ve built has come through trial and error, late nights learning, practicing, and slowly gaining confidence in my work and voice as an artist.
Another challenge has been learning not to compare my journey to others. Social media can make it seem like everyone else is growing faster or has everything figured out, but behind the scenes most small business owners are navigating uncertainty, financial pressure, burnout, and personal challenges while still trying to create something meaningful.
There have also been personal hardships throughout my life that shaped the way I see people and connection. While I wouldn’t wish those experiences on anyone, they’ve given me a deeper appreciation for authenticity, emotion, resilience, and the importance of preserving moments with the people we love.
I think one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that growth is rarely linear. Sometimes progress looks like major milestones, and sometimes it looks like simply continuing to show up when things feel difficult. Building something meaningful while staying true to yourself takes time, patience, and a willingness to keep going even when the path feels uncertain.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in outdoor portrait photography with a storytelling-driven style that focuses on emotion, connection, and authenticity. My work includes family, maternity, senior, and creative portrait sessions, all centered around creating images that feel natural and meaningful rather than overly posed.
I’m especially inspired by the Pacific Northwest and tend to gravitate toward earthy tones, natural light, movement, and locations that feel organic and grounded. Over the years, my editing style has evolved into something that reflects both emotion and atmosphere while still keeping people at the heart of the image.
One thing I’m most proud of is building my photography business slowly and intentionally while balancing full-time leadership work and raising a family. Photography has never just been about taking pictures for me — it’s about preserving seasons of life, telling stories, and creating something people emotionally connect to years later.
I think what sets my work apart is that I approach photography from a very human perspective. I care deeply about making people feel comfortable, seen, and valued during their session. Some of my favorite images are the quiet in-between moments that happen naturally rather than perfectly planned poses.
I’m also known for my creative and seasonal concepts, which allow me to blend storytelling and artistry in a more cinematic way. I love creating immersive sessions inspired by folklore, nature, nostalgia, and emotion while still keeping the experience approachable and authentic for clients.
At the end of the day, I want my work to feel honest. I want people to look back at their photos years from now and remember not just what they looked like, but how that season of life felt.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
There are so many people who deserve credit for helping me get to where I am today. First and foremost, my husband and family have been a huge part of this journey. Balancing full-time leadership work, motherhood, marriage, and building a creative business would not have been possible without their support, patience, encouragement, and willingness to walk through all the different seasons of life with me.
My best friend has also been one of my biggest supporters from the very beginning. She gave me honest feedback on my photos, constantly shared my work and posts, recommended me to others, and trusted me enough to let her entire family be my guinea pigs while I was still learning and growing. Having someone believe in you before you fully believe in yourself is something I’ll always be grateful for.
I’m also incredibly thankful for local photographers Wendy Newcomb-Walker and Destinee Turnipseed. While we are not close personally, both of them took time to encourage me and share insight that genuinely impacted me. Destinee gave me helpful feedback on locations, equipment, and growth as a photographer, which was incredibly encouraging early on.
Wendy especially had a huge impact on the way I viewed photography and the possibility of turning creativity into something more. She spent over an hour talking with me about her own journey, the hard work it took to get where she is, the fears and doubts that can come with building something creative, and how faith helped carry her through the unknown. That conversation stayed with me because it made everything feel more real and attainable.
My faith has also been a huge part of my journey, especially during difficult seasons in life. I don’t think my work would look the way it does without it. I’m drawn to connection, emotion, beauty, light, and authenticity because those are the things that helped ground me personally too. I want my work to feel honest and meaningful, and I hope people feel seen, valued, and comfortable when they are in front of my camera.
At the end of the day, I don’t think any creative journey is built alone. So much of this has been shaped by encouragement, support, shared wisdom, faith, and the people who believed in me while I was still figuring things out.
