Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Bloom.
Hi Andrew, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My path to founding Profit Logic wasn’t a straight line. I originally pursued a very different career path and spent years studying nonprofit leadership, ethics, and community-building. During that time, I was faced with a significant chronic health challenge that forced me to reevaluate my plans and rebuild my life from the ground up.
The thing about living with a chronic illness is that there is often no reliable timeline for recovery. I was frequently asked by my organization, “When will you return?” At first, I would answer, “Next spring… next fall…” But as time went on, and my doctors were still uncertain about what was causing my symptoms, I eventually stopped trying to predict the future.
I had to let go of the career path I had envisioned for myself and find a way to move forward within the boundaries necessary to protect my health. In many ways, that difficult transition became the beginning of a new chapter.
As I recovered, I explored several fields, including finance, entrepreneurship, and business strategy. That journey eventually led me back to school for my Ph.D., where I pursued advanced business studies and developed a deeper appreciation for how financial information helps organizations make better decisions.
Along the way, I discovered that accounting and bookkeeping combined many of the things I enjoy most: problem-solving, organization, teaching, and helping people succeed. I geeked out on all the little details and rules that come with solid accounting practices, but also appreciated the nuances in creating systems and reports that are actually useful for each individual business.
I was also pleasantly surprised to find that I could continue building meaningful relationships with business owners from many different industries, allowing me to retain some of the community-building aspects I had enjoyed most in the nonprofit world. The flexibility of remote work also made it possible to build a career that could adapt to the realities of managing a chronic health condition.
Today, in addition to running Profit Logic, I continue my doctoral studies in business, with a concentration in accounting, and remain passionate about helping small business owners use financial data as a tool for smarter decision-making and long-term success.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but I think that’s true for most business owners in any industry.
One of the biggest challenges has been client acquisition. When you’re starting a service-based business, it’s easy to assume that doing great work will automatically bring in clients. In reality, you also have to learn marketing, sales, networking, and how to communicate the value of what you do. Building trust takes time, especially when you’re asking someone to hand over responsibility for their finances.
Another challenge has been learning how to gather the information needed to keep accurate books without overwhelming clients in the process. Early on, I sometimes struggled to find the right balance. If you ask too few questions, you risk making incorrect assumptions. If you ask too many questions, clients can feel overwhelmed or frustrated.
Over time, I’ve learned that good bookkeeping is as much about communication and systems as it is about accounting. Setting clear expectations, creating organized processes, and explaining why information is needed has made a tremendous difference. Those lessons have helped me provide a better experience for clients while ensuring their financial records remain accurate and useful.
Like most entrepreneurs, I’ve had to wear many hats and learn a lot outside my original area of expertise. While those challenges haven’t always been easy, they’ve made me a better business owner and a better advisor to my clients.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Profit Logic?
Profit Logic is a bookkeeping firm that helps solopreneurs, consultants, coaches, creators, and other service-based business owners gain clarity and confidence in their finances. We provide bookkeeping, cleanup projects, and accounting support designed to help entrepreneurs understand their numbers and make informed business decisions.
I chose to focus on online business owners and solo entrepreneurs because I understand many of the challenges they face. They’re often responsible for every aspect of the business and simply don’t have the time or energy to become accounting experts on top of everything else.
What sets Profit Logic apart is our commitment to making accounting approachable and educational. Many business owners see bookkeeping as something intimidating that they have to deal with. I want them to see it as a tool that helps them make better decisions and build a stronger business. Rather than simply delivering reports, I focus on helping clients understand what their numbers are telling them.
I’m also passionate about building genuine relationships with clients. Behind every set of financial statements is a person with goals, challenges, and a vision for the future. I never want clients to feel like they’re just another account in a system. I’m especially grateful for the opportunity to work with a diverse community of entrepreneurs, including many LGBTQ+ business owners.
At its core, Profit Logic is built around clarity, integrity, and service. My goal is to help business owners feel less overwhelmed, more empowered, and confident about the financial side of their business.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
My relationship with risk has changed significantly over the years. Earlier in life, I thought risk was something you intentionally chose. After developing a chronic illness and having to leave the career path I had planned for myself, I learned that sometimes risk chooses you.
One of the biggest risks I ever took was starting over. I had invested years into a different professional direction, only to find myself facing a future that looked very different from the one I had imagined. Returning to school, pursuing a Ph.D. in Business, and eventually launching Profit Logic all required stepping into uncertainty without any guarantee that things would work out.
As a business owner, I don’t think of risk as something to avoid. I think of it as something to understand and manage. Every business decision involves uncertainty, whether it’s investing in marketing, hiring help, changing direction, or starting a company in the first place. The goal isn’t to eliminate risk—it’s to make informed decisions while accepting that no outcome is ever completely guaranteed. I see it as making trade-offs. If I want to experiment with one aspect of my business, I usually need to say no to a lot of other opportunities, with no certainty that it will result in a successful outcome.
In many ways, entrepreneurship has taught me that growth and uncertainty tend to travel together. Some of the most meaningful opportunities in my life have come from taking thoughtful risks, learning from mistakes, and being willing to adapt when circumstances changed. That’s a mindset I bring both to my business and to the clients I serve.
