Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaylee Hopkins.
Hi Kaylee, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been passionate about design and architecture for as long as I can remember. As a child, I spent hours reading architecture and design books, creating art, and building things alongside my dad and grandpa. Long before I understood the principles of design, I knew I wanted to spend my life creating beautiful, meaningful spaces.
I began my education at my local community college before earning my Bachelor of Arts in Interior Design from George Fox University. Throughout college, I sought every opportunity to learn by shadowing residential designers, visiting showrooms across Oregon, attending industry seminars as well as working on DIY projects for my family.
After graduating, I spent six years as a cabinet designer. Although it wasn’t the path I originally envisioned for myself, it gave me invaluable experience working alongside builders and tradespeople and taught me that great design must be both beautiful and practical.
That experience gave me the confidence to start Carson & James Design, where we specialize in residential design. We believe every home should reflect the people who live in it, so we take the time to understand our clients’ lifestyles, values, and daily routines before making design decisions.
To me, interior design is about far more than creating beautiful spaces. Thoughtful design has the power to improve the way we live, bringing organization, comfort, and a sense of calm to everyday life. My goal is to create timeless homes that serve families well for years to come while helping people appreciate the intention behind truly great design.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
From the outside looking in, my journey may seem like it has been smooth, but every stage of my career has stretched me in ways I didn’t anticipate. Looking back, each challenge has required me to grow into the next version of myself.
Early in my career, I experienced a significant shift from constantly learning under professors and mentors to suddenly being responsible for projects, client relationships, and decisions that carried real consequences. It was exciting, but also very intimidating. As my workplace evolved and leadership changed, I found myself relying less on the guidance of others and more on my own judgment. Looking back, those experiences strengthened my confidence, taught me to adapt, and prepared me for the responsibility of eventually leading my own business.
Starting Carson & James Design brought a different kind of growth. I knew I would wear many hats, but the challenge has been finding balance while continuing to serve my clients well. Every day requires me to shift between design, project management, marketing, networking, and the many responsibilities that come with running a business. I’ve learned that building a business isn’t about doing everything at once; it’s about knowing where to invest your time and continuing to move forward, even when progress feels slow.
One of the most humbling lessons has been learning to let go of the timeline I created for myself. There have been projects I was convinced would be “the one” opportunity that would elevate my business or open the next door, but for reasons beyond my control, they never came to fruition. At first, those moments were discouraging. Over time, I’ve realized that I can’t force opportunities to happen. What I can do is continue refining my craft, serving my clients well, and staying true to the passion that inspired me to pursue design in the first place.
Today, I define success differently than I once did. Instead of waiting for one big breakthrough, I’ve learned to appreciate steady growth, meaningful relationships, and the opportunity to continually improve. I believe the right opportunities will come in their own time, and until then, my focus is on becoming the best designer and business owner I can be.

I am a Certified Residential Designer and the owner of Carson & James Design, a residential design firm focused on custom homes, remodels, and full-service interior design.
Carson & James was built from my love and passion for both family and true craftsmanship. Growing up, I was surrounded by people who were always creating. Whether it was building homes, renovating properties, running businesses, or finding creative solutions to everyday problems, their example showed me the value of hard work, integrity, and taking pride in what you create. Those values have become the foundation of my own business.
The name Carson & James actually comes from family names. I chose it because I wanted my business to represent something bigger than myself. To me, family represents legacy, trust, and building something that lasts, and those are the same principles I hope clients experience when they work with me.
What I love most about design is that it has the ability to change the way we experience home. Interior design isn’t just about creating a beautiful room, it’s about creating an environment that supports the people living in it. Every decision, from the floor plan and lighting to the materials and colors, influences how a space feels and functions.
That’s why I approach every project with intention. I want my clients to have a home that reflects who they are, works for the way they live, and still feels just as meaningful years from now as it did the day they moved in. If people remember one thing about Carson & James Design, I hope it’s that every decision we make has a purpose.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Definitely work hard, be willing to put in the hours, continue learning, and never stop improving your craft. There is no substitute for genuine passion and a strong work ethic.
However, don’t ever let your ambition rob you of the joy of the journey. It’s easy to become so focused on where you want to be that you forget to appreciate where you are. I myself have struggled with feeling as if I should be further along, when in reality, every season has taught me something I needed for the next.
Don’t compare your path to someone else’s. Every business, every career, and every person has a different story. The moment you start measuring your success against someone else’s timeline, you lose sight of your own.
Most importantly, remember why you started. There will be exciting seasons and there will be ordinary ones filled with emails, paperwork, meetings, and countless behind-the-scenes tasks. Learn to love those moments too. Building a meaningful career isn’t just about the highlight reel, it’s about faithfully showing up every day, even when the work feels mundane.
Do your best, give yourself grace, and believe that there is a reason for the journey. The opportunities you’re hoping for will come in time. Until then, focus on becoming the kind of person who is ready for them when they do.
