Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Black.
Hi Laura , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Born and raised in a cult, astrology found me at a young age and acted as a catalyst for my escape and became my main lifeline through a tumultuous decade of deconstruction and healing. Today I am a professional astrologer, yoga teacher, and yoga teacher trainer who uses astrology as a map to craft and shape my movement classes, which I view as somatic rituals for attuning to the cycles and seasons of life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Anything but smooth… oh my… In astrological language, we would say that my Sun is in the 8th House Conjunct Mars and my North Node, trine Saturn and Pluto exactly on my Ascendant. Those words alone would make any fluent astrologer shudder, as they describe a lifetime full of constant death and rebirth, intensity, and psychological turmoil. My soul seems to be craving a lifetime in which I chose the hard way. I even have the asteroid Sisyphus on my north node – translation: my dharmic path in this life is marked by the same energy of Sisyphus, cursed by Zeus to push a boulder uphill over and over only for it to roll back down to the bottom each and every time. The growth happens when I learn to embrace the struggle and accept my path, which has been extraordinarily chaotic and lonely, as is often the case for cult survivors. Many cult survivors lose everything in order to get out of the high control system, and I am lucky to have landed in a place where I am beginning to rebuild myself and my life after great loss. I’m grateful in hindsight for the journey, for the amazing gifts of astrology and yoga that I’ve been given, and above all for the opportunity to connect with others around these tools and practices.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a professional astrologer, yogi, yoga teacher, and teacher trainer. I think what I do as a creative can be best summarized as AstroYoga, combining the two sister sciences to help people come into deeper and stronger Self connection as a foundation to nourish and nurture all other relationships in life. I have a Master of Fine Arts in Dance from the University of Oregon and my background in the arts has strongly influenced and shaped my teaching practice. I’m fortunate to be leading the yoga teacher training program at WildLight Yoga Center in Eugene, and even more fortunate to have my dearest teachers and mentors on the current faculty. I specialize in helping my clients examine and understand themselves and their life as a whole, to find clarity and a sense of unshakable connection to their deepest Self and sense of purpose both on and off the yoga mat. I translate the stars and help the unconscious become conscious so my clients can confidently bring forth what is within their soul. I think what sets me apart from other practitioners in my field is the depth to which I have been willing to meet and face myself. It is a practice and a path to which I am more committed than any other, and I believe that once we have stared our deepest wounds, issues, and shame stories straight in the eye and come to know them all the way through, a power emerges from within us that is palpable by others. I have watched my work become potent for others around me to the exact degree that I have willingly faced and owned my own shit, if you’ll excuse my language.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Sisyphus was cursed by Zeus. Asteroid Sisyphus is on my Sun (identity) and North Node (path). I am Sisyphus. I accept my lack of luck. The more I accept my circumstances and embrace the moments of misfortune, the less unfortunate they seem.
But yes… “bad luck” is an old friend in this life. I’ll save the stories tucked away in my closet of dark secrets for another day.
On the flip side, how lucky am I to have been saved and guided through my darkest nights by the stars?? Pretty cool and extraordinarily lucky if you ask me!
