Today we’d like to introduce you to Tammy Yorba.
Hi Tammy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was with Wells Fargo Bank for 23 years, before receiving my displacement notice. I wasn’t honestly sure what I would do post displacement, but I wrote a list of everything I wanted in an ideal future career. My list included: People, Community, to use the Spanish that I’d been studying on Duolingo for 6 years, Helping people, Fulfillment, and flexible schedule. The day I found out I would be displaced in November; I updated my profile to ‘open to work’. Someone from my network reached out to ask if I’d ever considered a career at Edward Jones. I had an account at Edward Jones, which came to me after my mother passed away, but it wasn’t on my radar. Nonetheless, I needed a job, and I responded asking for details. After several interviews, I found that being a Financial Advisor met all of the requirements on my list.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The onboarding process is intense to obtain securities licensing, but I passed each test on my first try, and I felt that went smoothly. The hardest thing about what I do, is ‘sales’. I didn’t have any experience in sales specifically, but I had good mentors, who encouraged me, and helped me to understand that sales is just customer service at a different level. What I offer is valuable, I let people know what I do for a living, and if they need my help, I’m happy to do so.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a proud living kidney donor. I gave my kidney in July 2022, on behalf of my high-school friend Earl. We were not a direct match, so I gave into the program, which entitled him to receive a kidney from the program. There was a lot of medical testing, but that’s paid for by the recipient’s insurance. It’s a very easy process for the donor, and most people can easily live with only 1 kidney. Additionally, because I am a living kidney donor, if anything ever happens that causes me to need a kidney, I get moved up the list. I volunteer with Donate Life Northwest to promote education of the process.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I’m a Master Scuba Diver. I first became a certified diver in the summer of 2015, and I achieved my Master Scuba Diver certification the following year after completing the 3 required courses (Open Water, Advanced, and Rescue Diver), 5 specialty courses (Night Diver, Buoyancy, Deep Diver, Search and Recovery, and Boat Diver), and completed 50 recorded dives. I also love to take underwater photos while diving.
