Today we’d like to introduce you to Emma Garrow.
Emma, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up loving and expressing myself through art, I was obsessed with anything and everything creative. I started painting and live music performance at 5 and started musical theatre when I was 11 years old. Makeup and costuming was my favorite part of the process, it gave me so much confidence, happiness, and made me feel closer to myself. When 2020 hit, I finally had the time and freedom to explore creative makeup. I started practicing and built my confidence, then I started sharing my work online and attended to beauty school. Diving back into art was the best thing to ever happen to me, it makes me feel alive and I can’t live without.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It wasn’t always easy expressing myself through art. As a child, it was the best thing ever to paint and sew with my grandma all day. I felt closest to myself back then, but as years went on I felt more insecure about who I was and what I was making. Art has always been vulnerable for me, it’s sharing my soul with everyone to consume and judge. I’m thankful for 2020 in a way because it was a turning point I needed; to slow down and finally reconnect with myself. Art is all about love and confidence, and relearning to love myself brought me closer to my craft. I’m finally making art I’m extremely proud of and truly reflects who I am.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in creative/SFX makeup. I’m completely self taught so I’m known for my illustrative maximalist style. I really do march to the beat of my own drum, I think that does set me apart and give me a unique creative perspective. I think my proudest moment recently was a completely abstract makeup look I did on myself. It was a drawing I turned into a makeup piece, it has 2 faces facing each other with a blue hazy background. The faces are whispering to each other, and they’re completely different yet still in sync with each other. The color scheme is my favorite take away, various blues purples light green white.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Stay true to myself no matter! There will never be another me, and that’s truly awesome even if I don’t always feel that. No amount of money or status will fill my cup the way that making art does for me. My art isn’t for everyone and that’s ok, it’s not meant for everyone it’s meant for me.
