Rising Stars: Meet Julia Bowlin of Oregon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Bowlin.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am very lucky to have had animals in my life even as a child. Canines in particular fascinate me with their intelligence and adaptability. They are found in more climates and jobs than any other animal.
I had decided to join a program that rescues dogs from shelters and trains them to do tasks and alerting for deaf people. It seemed a win, win situation. But, on my way to that path, people started asking me for help with their dogs’ behavior problems and that shifted my focus from getting dogs out of shelters to preventing them from going in in the first place.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The largest roadblock is getting people to believe in the pixie dust that the whispering method operates in. Usually people have tried two or three different approaches before they find me and they are discouraged and desperate. They have tried everything they know of as a human and feel hopeless.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a dog trainer. I work with owners to understand their dogs better. I focus on forming a relationship for them based on love, mutual respect, and trust.
The method is based on Cesar Millan’s teachings of finding balance.
A unique perspective of using the dogs’ own style of body language, touch, and reward to communicate beyond having to negotiate with treats. It takes creativity and patience to earn a dog’s respect rather than just escalating words.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I think we should all keep learning. Cesar Millán is my greatest inspiration so I watch his work closely.
All things being connected, The Tao of Pooh” and “The Last Lecture” are inspiring books about keeping yourself balanced and positive. The dogs can feel your energy and they will help you step into leadership if you let them.
