Rising Stars: Meet Uju of Oregon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Uju.

Hi uju, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Uju Uzuegbunam, and I am the founder of Ozznek — a children’s footwear brand built from lived experience, resilience, and a deeply personal need I saw as a mother.

My journey began when I came to the United States from Nigeria as an asylum seeker with my two-month-old son. I arrived with no support system, very limited resources, and the overwhelming responsibility of starting over while caring for a newborn. Those early years were marked by survival, uncertainty, and moments of deep emotional and financial struggle. But they were also the foundation of everything I would later build.

Ozznek was not something I planned in a traditional business sense — it came from a vision I experienced during that season of my life. I had a clear dream about a shoe design that could solve a problem I later came to understand deeply: children constantly outgrowing shoes and families repeatedly spending money on something that could be more thoughtful, sustainable, and adaptable.

That vision became Ozznek — a patented, interchangeable footwear system designed for growing children. Each pair is created with a focus on flexibility, foot health, and sustainability, allowing families to get more value while reducing waste. But beyond the product itself, Ozznek represents something bigger: the belief that children should grow in shoes that support their natural movement, confidence, and development.

As a founder, I have built Ozznek from the ground up while raising my child and navigating life as an immigrant woman entrepreneur. I understand firsthand what it means to start with nothing and still choose to build. Today, Ozznek is a reflection of that journey — a brand rooted in innovation, but powered by story, motherhood, and resilience.

My mission is simple: to create thoughtfully designed children’s products that support healthy development while also giving families practical, beautiful, and meaningful solutions. I want Ozznek to continue growing into a brand that represents not just footwear, but empowerment — for children, and for the parents raising them.

I believe I will succeed in business because Ozznek was not created as an idea—it was built from necessity, lived experience, and resilience.

I started this journey as an asylum seeker, arriving in the United States with my newborn son and very limited resources. In that season, I learned how to build from nothing, how to solve problems with creativity instead of capital, and how to keep moving forward even when the path was uncertain. That foundation shaped the way I approach business today.

Ozznek was born from a real problem I experienced and observed firsthand: children constantly outgrowing their shoes, and families needing something more thoughtful, sustainable, and intentional. I didn’t guess the problem—I lived it, and I built a solution around it. That level of personal connection gives me clarity and conviction in every decision I make.

I also believe in Ozznek because I have proven my ability to execute under pressure. I have built the brand from the ground up—designing products, developing concepts, managing production conversations, and growing a business while raising a child. I understand what it means to do more with less, and I have learned how to stay consistent even when resources are limited.

Most importantly, I am deeply committed to the mission. Ozznek is not just a business to me—it is a long-term vision rooted in children’s health, confidence, and sustainability. That purpose keeps me grounded and focused, even when challenges arise.

I believe I will succeed because I am not building Ozznek for short-term results. I am building it with patience, lived insight, and a level of persistence that comes from having no other option but to keep going.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve faced challenges at every stage of building Ozznek, but each one has made the business stronger.
One of the biggest hurdles has been bringing an innovative product to market. Turning a patented idea into a finished product required years of research, product development, prototyping, and finding the right manufacturing partners. There were setbacks, delays, and countless revisions before I had a product that truly reflected my vision.
Another challenge has been growing the business with limited resources. Every decision—from inventory and production to marketing and operations—has required careful planning. I’ve had to prioritize long-term sustainability over rapid growth, which has meant being patient and strategic with every opportunity.
As a product-based business, I’ve also experienced supply chain disruptions, shipping delays, rising production costs, and the unpredictability that comes with manufacturing. Learning to adapt quickly and solve problems has become an essential part of running the company.
Finally, balancing the demands of entrepreneurship with raising my family has required discipline and resilience. Building a business is rarely a nine-to-five commitment, and there have been many seasons where I’ve had to make difficult decisions and sacrifices to keep moving forward.
While the journey hasn’t been easy, every challenge has reinforced my belief in Ozznek’s mission. The obstacles have taught me to be resourceful, adaptable, and persistent—qualities that continue to shape both me as a founder and the company I’m building.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At Ozznek, we design thoughtfully crafted children’s footwear and apparel that support healthy movement without sacrificing style. We specialize in barefoot-style shoes that feature flexible soles, wide toe boxes, and lightweight designs to encourage natural foot development while keeping little ones comfortable through every adventure.

One thing you’ll notice about our brand is our love for color. We believe childhood should be joyful, expressive, and full of personality, so we intentionally create colorful shoes and clothing that children are excited to wear. Our goal is to combine vibrant, playful designs with functional features that parents can feel good about.

What sets Ozznek apart is our commitment to creating products that are both stylish and purposeful. We don’t believe families should have to choose between healthy footwear and beautiful design—they deserve both. Every product is created with comfort, quality, and longevity in mind, allowing children to move naturally while expressing their unique personalities.

What I’m most proud of is building a brand that reflects both innovation and heart. Ozznek was created to solve real problems for families while helping children grow confidently and comfortably. Knowing that our products support healthy development and bring joy to families is what inspires us every day.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
The three things I’m most passionate about are my children, Ozznek, and my community.

My children are my greatest inspiration and the reason I strive to build something meaningful that will leave a lasting impact. They remind me every day why creating products that support healthy growth and joyful childhoods matters.

Ozznek is more than a business—it’s a mission. I’m passionate about designing children’s products that combine comfort, healthy foot development, and beautiful, colorful designs that families love.

I’m also deeply passionate about my community. Throughout my journey, I’ve experienced the power of encouragement and support, and I believe in giving back whenever I can. Whether it’s supporting fellow entrepreneurs, connecting with families, or creating products that genuinely improve everyday life, I’m committed to making a positive difference in the communities I serve.
